Planning a tropical beach wedding and want to be sure it knocks the socks off your attendees? In addition, do you want your first day of the rest of your life with your spouse to be as close to flawless as possible?
Over the years, we’ve designed a good number of destination wedding and want to share a few things we’ve learned that will make a difference in wowing family and friends. (Why should the happy couple be the only ones who gush over the momentous occasion?)
Don’t Have Your Ceremony on the Beach
If you are having an outdoor wedding, especially one that’s on the beach, make sure to let your guests know so they can dress appropriately. For some folks, anything that isn’t paved means they’re going to need to wear flats. You’re better off to warn your family than to have an empty dance floor at your reception due to turned ankles and rolled joints. (Plus, you’ll be happier if you don’t try to trudge through sand in stilettos, too!)
Don’t Give Bugs an Invitation
Mosquitoes and other pests can ruin even the most festive weddings and receptions. Plan for bugs! If you’re traveling for your big day, it’s not unreasonable to see what the locals recommend warding off insects in their area. If you don’t get a specific recommendation, bug spray for guests would be advisable.
When I attend weddings in tropical climates, I personally pack Skin-so-Soft. But use your favorite repellant.
Your Ceremony Doesn’t Have to be Open Air to be Amazing
Some of our favorite wedding ceremonies, destination and otherwise, have been held in chapels by the water rather than out in the elements. Beautiful scenery and serene beaches are just as perfect when visited after the ceremony. (Plus, it saves the photographer time and effort in the retouching phase – there are bound to be fewer fly away hairs when you don’t have winds coming off the water!)
Stay Cool and Hydrated
Depending of the season and time of day of the wedding, it may be a great idea to ask your wedding coordinator to pack some bottled water for your guests. While they are waiting for things to start, it can get hot if your wedding is in the summer, at 3pm in the Caribbean or Mexico.
You may intend to do a welcome bags for your guests which is great. It is a good idea to have the cute folding fans in the bag so on the day of, your guests can use them for helping to keep cool if they are outdoors for the wedding.
